indeed, scan in safe mode, that usually works, if not
you can try to regulate which programs boot with your computer . . . I use winpatrol, it will display boot items, running processes, hidden files, services and more. Make sure there is no spyware starting up with your computer, or any spyware running in the backround.

make sure you know which files your disabling. (a search on google will tell you)
Try a good antispyware software to remove all the spyware/adware/virus and popups :-

download is free and scan " -

Try installing an anti spyware pop-up blocker and then it will be gone, if you need help installing it call your local computer store and ask them to help you!
DOWNLOAD AVG , IT'S FREE AND VERY GOOD
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

In XP, I have done this, no popups--
* Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
* Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
* Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
* Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.
(IF you are the only PC user, and not part of a domain.)
That also eliminates one svchost process in Task Manager.
Pop ups are a sign of spyware on your PC.
Goto www.ewido.net and run the free version to remove the spyware.
Here are a few other free ones that I use.
