Fireplaces in the off-season...do you "decorate"?
Question:
Answer:
I have a collection of candles on a terra cotta plate (the type for under a large flower pot) in mine. You can still get that pretty glow without all the heat. No screen in the summer.
WE CLEAN OURS OUT AND PLACE A 16 CANDLE HOLDER IN ITS PLACE SO WHEN WE WATCH TV SOME TIMES AT NIGHT YOU STILL GET THE FIRE MOOD LIGHT WITH OUT THE HEAT.
When I had my fireplace, in the off-months, I would buy cheap artificial flowers and put them in the wood holder, that way if the doors are open it really shows, then put candles of different sizes in holders on the hearth in front of it. It made it look very pretty and I got lots of comments on it.
We put one of those "screens" that has a bunch of votive candle holders in it so when we want the ambience of a fire, we just light the candles.
use a decorative wood screen or candle screen.

i use a candle holder with six candles (large ones) in it, a screen over that, and lots of pictures and a mantle clock when it's not in use.
I put real logs in mine, with some greenery beneath them. I have some cute pine cone candles that sit atop the pile. On the hearth, I have a nice little metal basket with real pine cones and acorns that I got from my yard.
