They are all hooked up to a server. Each computer still needs its own RAM and CPU thou.
Thin client will do this. You basically have to setup one big server (Giant Computer) as a Terminal Server. With the thin client you login to this server. Nothing is installed on the thin client. You install all applications once on the server, and everyone with thin clients will have it if you set the permissions that way. Problem is if the Giant computer goes down everyone is down. Its a neat system we use it at work. Saves on workstation costs and maintenance time.
Yes they could.would be called a dumb terminal. They were around before your standard PCs were. I think they replaced punch cards! :-)
Some places of employment don't have PCs for there workers. They will be "hooked" up on a network and use shared tools...OS, office packages, etc, ... These can be costly when all is considered. It would be easier to buy a bunch of low end PCs and a bunch of wireless routers.
Don't forget that these companies hire dedicated professionals to manage their networks. And these people weren't hired to also make coffee!
