HIPPA Rules for Medicare Part D Insurance providers?

Question:
As a Part D provider I know that Medicare will share information with us about our members. As long as we know the members personal information...easy enough to find right on their member screen.

Does anyone know the HIPPA rules when trying to get information from another Part D provider? Sometimes I find that the enrollment date/form or disenrollment date/letter is helpful when trying to assist members on how they got duplicate coverage and ect.

Answer:
HIPAA privacy rules would likely prevent this kind of exchange. You need to have a business relationship with the other entity, and still provide the PHI required to prove you have a relationship with the member. If you are one drug store trying to call another, no dice. If you are a provider talking to a payer or a relative of the patient, that is permitted.
