Answer:
Well seeing as this computer is a HP-Compaq then you will only be able to up grade a few parts. First of all, and the easiest, is the Ram. Depending on the model you should have at least one slot open for RAM upgrade. The Processor on an HP or Compaq, USUALLY, is not upgradeable anymore. The Hard drive is the next easiest to upgrade, with sizes up to 160GB in PATA running pretty inexpensive. Last thing you can upgrade on this computer is the wireless card, BUT you have to get one that is made to run with an HP because HP bios' are locked to certain wireless cards. Good Luck
Please tell the exact Company & Model number also. It will be easier that way, seeing from the list though, I believe you can upgrade

1) Processor
2) RAM
3) Hard disk

As I said earlier, it will be easier if you can provide the Company name who has made it and exact model number. That way it will be easier to find upgrades for your laptop. You can just visit their website, look for your laptop model and see upgrades for it.
Hard to upgrade a laptop...
Usually the easiest to upgrade a laptop with is memory.

Since you say that video memory is partially shared with the standard RAM - i`d say you "must" upgrade that to keep your computer running sort of smoothly.

also, it is possible to exchange the internal harddrive with a larger one, but they are pretty expensive.
You could consider adding a small external harddrive for data and storage.
You can increase the RAM, storage capacity, I think the maximum RAM that can be upgraded is 2GB and the Hard drive is 160 GB.

Check out with the company specifications or let me know the manufacturer
you can change your memory to 2GB if your board supports it & more hard drive space perhaps. you'll noice a uge chage in the speed.
