Developing a web 2.0 website?

Question:
I am looking to build a small web 2.0 website. The basic features will be a gmail type interface, where the initial interface will be a login screen.

Once logged in, people will be able to create custom web-pages, and will have some cool web 2.0 features like community building, sharing etc.

I want to know what would be the best way to go about developing such a website?

I have some basic knowledge of html/javascript and would like to develop this website using javascript, dhtml and css. I am open to using some type of open source solution, however, there will be extensive customization on my end, so I want to make sure that the code is easily extensible/maintainable.

I am also open to developing it from scratch so in this case, I would appreciate if you could guide me to poweful javascript libraries. Thanks and I appreciate your help in this regard!

Answer:
A website like this would require more than javascript, html, and css. Probably some PHP would be needed. Contact me if you want help.
