I get this problem too, it's very annoying... all you can really do is download and install the latest version of Yahoo Messenger, as the message tells you to do. If you prefer to use a different client (as I do), you can also install the latest version temporarily, decline the add request with a short explanatory message, and then uninstall it. There's not really any way round it I'm afraid, sorry!
