WHY are there 40 million people without health insurance?

Question:
You buy home owners insurance to protect your home from random acts of God, or a child with a match.

You buy auto insurance for your new car, mobile home, or boat for random acts of carelessness, or dropping your Starbucks in your lap during morning rush hour.

You pay extra for those electronic warranties when you buy your big screen televisions with your tax checks.

You pay for your cell phone bills, including the ability to check your email from it and the family share plan so your 10 year old is sporting one too.

You might even pay for various other kinds of insurances, ranging from malpractice to service warranties.

Why are all these material things more important to you than your health and that of your family?

Is there a reason why you feel society OWES it to you to pay for your health insurance, so you can continue to mis-manage your money and pay for luxuries?
I got a great offer for health insurance just the other day, lets see I have it here, "for as little as 100 dollars a month you can have health insurance. Ok lets look at this

I make about 600-800 dollars a month, depending on how many hours my second job gives me. The house payment alone is 450 of that, next are the utility's amounting to about 200 dollars more, food oh we have to get that from the government. Other things-don't really need them do we?

Office visit to the doctor-around 50-60 dollars-how often have I needed to go in the last 2 years 3-4 times. Hmmmm You do the math.

had to drop the cable, had to lower the phone bill, can't buy clothes for any of us. Only have one working TV and you bet its not a big screen. Thank God the car is now paid for, and I can now get by with PLPD for it.

Also, I don't want the same people who run the IRS and the postal service to run my healthcare thank you. Please find some other way.
Because they cannot afford to pay the premium.
You buy those other insurances because most of them are mandated by the government...hmmmm imagine that
MANY families live at a sustinence level. A couple of thousand bucks a month is way out of their ability to pay for it.
You're too ignorant to believe.
Because many Americans are stuck in low wage jobs that either do not offer insurance or when they do its more costly than the low wages they in fact make, lets address that ok?
High premiums for small benefits.
$100 a month? What's your deductable? What does it cover?

That kind of insurance sounds to me to be really good as long as you don't get sick or in an accident.
amen...

1/3 of those people earn over $70,000 per year and refuse to buy it on their own.

1/3 are young. Those young adults are forced by Dems to pay as much for insurance as a 60 year old who has had 5 heart attacks. That is wrong of the Dems to pass such laws.
They are lazy welfare addicts with no jobs.
Good question. I think you are spot on. Many people don't think they should have to pay for health care insurance but they will willing to spend on alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs.
I will look up the numbers later.

But some have an oppprtunity to have insurance with work, but don't want any money deducted from their paycheck.

Some qualify for medicare but don't apply, whether due to ignorance, pride or moral reasons.

Many, believe it or not, are actually illegal immigrants!

Many honestly can't afford it.

But I wonder how many of those who can't afford it are people like my brother. He is always getting fired. And always putting off getting another job. And nothing is ever his fault! BTW - the family has a TV with satelite in every room. Everyone in that house is overweight. They go out to eat & to the movies pretty regularly. Yet they can't manage to pay for insurance.

I do have sympathy for those who honesty try & still can't afford it. But I mostly have sympathy for the kids. It's not their fault their parents have no sense of priorities!
You got it all wrong. In a situation where most affordable health insurance is employer based it stands to reason you have to work in a venue that offerers insurance. Those venues are fast vanishing from the world of work. Second, health insurance companies are not in the business of insuring your health...they're in the business of taking your money and then trying to weasel out of paying your bills. Their underwriting rule don't allow for them to insure anyone who may actually get sick..why would they do that? Also, not everyone who doesn't have good health insurance mis-manages their money. Even the best managers can't afford the inflated premiums charged. Sorry, but the US needs a UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE plan that covers all Americans...it will happen sooner or later, but 'later' means a lot of people are going to suffer.
Offshoring jobs, hiring illegals as well as giving them free medical benefits costs everybody some bucks, increases unemployment and is part of the problem. Just think if that guest worker plan had passed you might have to cancel your health insurance plan so you can cover the increase in taxes to pay for them illegals medical coverage. I've read some pretty dumb questions and this one ranks near the top .
Well many of them have opted out of insurance policies they COULD have but declined because their employer gives them a refund back for not taking it.

And some just dont have it.
First of all, many, many people do NOT have all or any of the "things" you mentioned. Many cannot afford food, clothing and housing--yep, right here in the good ol' USA!

Secondly, health care plans used to be included in the benefits packages for most full-time employees. Then, as costs rose, more and more of the burden was paced on the worker. Sure, the corporations make it possible to get into a "plan", but the costs are more and more prohibitive all the time!

Health care plans are highly overpriced, as are medical costs.
The whole industry--and that's exactly what medicine has become--needs an overhaul. The "stories" you've heard about $100 aspirin are true! (I could spend a week in a suite at a high class hotel, have round the clock personal nursing care, and all of my medications for less than a day and a half stay in hospital!! And doctors? Well, stay in a hospital and you'll be lucky if you see one once a day.)

Besides, we are the only "civilized" country in the world that does not provide (at least in part) health care for its citizens.

If we care so much about people in other countries, why don't we care about our own? Or, as Michael Moore pointed out, the detainees at Gitmo get better care than the survivors of 9/11! That's a horrible indictment of this country's respect for its own citizens.
You have a very valid point and I do agree. People that are in "poverty" in the US have their cars, their big tv's, their designer clothes, play stations and so on... I have seen it over and over. I did a lot of service work for the Philadelphia community and it always blew my mind that some of these people had those types of items yet lacked in so many of the basic needs. I also so those that didn't have those things and worked hard for the basics. You know, it was always the hard working people who never asked for the help and they were always happier.

Back to the point. There are a lot of people that do need help and sometimes due to circumstances beyond their control. Take for instance New Orleans and Katrina. People needed help and it was appropriate to give it to them. However, then you see some of these losers turn around and spend the money that was given to them to help them get by on strippers and alcohol.

The point is, don't come crying for help when you are not doing EVERYTHING you can to fix the situation. If you can't be responsible the help should end. Why is so bad to require progress of some sort for the hand out? Others work hard enough to do it. At times my father worked 2 jobs to do it. I have 4 kids a stay at home mom and I pay for my own health insurance.

When I first got married and didn't have it and my wife was pregnant we went on state aid. While on state aid I worked hard enough in my job to earn me a full time position and health benefits. I was 21 at the time. We were able to get off the state aid before we had the baby.

All it is is a matter of priorities. Get some perspective and if you want it bad enough, anyone can get it. The only thing keeping people down are themselves. You are never "stuck" in a job... go apply yourself and find a new one.

I wonder how the insurance companies are so rich if no one can afford it? I also wonder what the percentage of people in say. Africa is who have health care coverage? or Russia... yeah try that one.
Because they don't live in Cuba

Drum... (buda boom)
Blue Cross Blue Shield offers affordable health insurance, there is no reason why anyone doesn't have it. They would rather have luxuries in life than pay their fair share. And they want hand outs at others expense.
I am sure you have described a certain percentage of people who do not have health care insurance - they usually have vehicle insurance and home owners insurance because both are mandated by either the law or the finance company.
I am self employed and pay just under $700 a month for two relatively healthy individuals. It is not the best or the worst insurance I could get, but it is far better than the outrageous bills I would receive for a catastrophic illness or injury.
It isn't difficult to imagine that anyone in a low or medium income job simply cannot afford $100 weekly for minimal coverage or almost $200 weekly for coverage that actually pays for some of the most used medical expenses.
And, remember, The Federal Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act mandates that all hospitals that have an emergency department must treat anyone who shows up for care - including illegal immigrants. Some might use the emergency rooms as a primary care facility. Some others might realize this and have to sincerely ask themselves why the hell they bother to have health insurance at all.
It's just not as simple as people mismanaging their money.
There's always the County Hospital which pays for medical care for the poor.
And people on Welfare receive Medical which is complete health care coverage provided to them by the Government.
Also people receiving Social Security get medical coverage paid for by the Government.
Illegals who aren't even American citizens get absolutely everything for free and they aren't even American citizens.

So why is everyone so concerned about free Universal Health Care when they already have it?
How many do not have Health Insurance by choice? Yes, I know Democrats hate people having a choice.
