Question: Please help..I want to listen to a program on line..I have windows xp and windows media player?
I got this message and don't understand it at all. It said "windows media player cannot connect to the server the server name might not be correct the serer might not be available or your proxey settings might not be correct"
then I got this for further info
If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, on the Network tab, select a protocol, click Configure, and then select Autodetect proxy settings or Use proxy settings of the Web browser (available for HTTP protocol only).
To verify your proxy server settings
Click the arrow below the Now Playing tab, and then click More Options.
Click the Network tab.
Verify your settings in the Streaming proxy settings area.
where do I find all this stuff..and can you explain some of what this is saying to a newbie..please..I really want to listen to this show
Answer:
Need more info the site might be closed.
Post the link to your show , or give instructions on how to get there.
Ok this relates to a non-work computer cause they may be blocking it, if this is the case check with you it person at work
If you are using your own pc:
Ok I went to the link , I created my own account , logged in, then got a page to upgrade (pay)for their service. I just ignored it and clicked: "Listen Live" and I can hear the live show ok, so their servers are NOT down.
Maybe your Windows media player is an older version , I have version : 10 , by the way.
If the version is ok, then I suggest you do this as per their website:
Should you experience any problems, please send an email to streaming@stephaniemiller.com and let us know the following:
1- What type of computer you are using (Mac, PC, etc.)
2- What Operating System your computer is running (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Mac OS9, Mac OSX, etc.)
3- What version of the Windows Media Player you are using
4- How you connect to the Internet (DSL, Cable Modem, T1, Dialup Modem, etc.), and who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider - IE AOL, Comcast, Earthlink, etc.)
Hope that helps.
try to listen to a few diferent programs from different websites. if you can hear other programs, then you will confirm my original suspicion:
they messed up. email the website offering whatever you're trying to listen to and tell them they messed up.

All the message is saying is that the website is unavailable at the moment, it could be because the URL you are clicking on / typing in is incorrect or possibly the server is down. I t may also be that so many people are trying to look at the show that the server is overloaded and you cant get through.
If you haven't set up a Proxy server then, unless it's a work computer, it's unlikely the computer connects via a proxy - so don't worry about that.
Keep trying and double check the spelling of the URL

It sounds like the site you are trying to access is no longer available. To be sure try using a different type of media player to access the same site. Check if the site allows other types of players like Real Player or Quicktime. Another option is try to re-install windws media player. If you don't have version 11 you can download it for free from microsofts website.
