Need help explaining so called "hiatus" from IT on my resume and how do I fill that gap?
Question: I graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor's degree in EE. During the summers, I worked for a networking lab on campus. After graduating, I was a teaching assistant till 9/11. We all know how the job market went after that. I kind of "gave up" on IT for a while, but I am ready to get back into the industry.
I am presently looking for an entry-level help desk/teck support position, and hence I was thinking of taking the CompTIA A+ certification exam. Hopefully, when I pass the exam, I believe that will help my marketability with prospective employers and I will be able to put curernt IT related stuff on my resume. I've been studying on my own.
Pretty much I am asking for help on how to explain my so-called "hiatus" on my resume and fill the gap. I don't want prospective employers to think that I am lazy, or unmotivated, but the opposite.
Answer:
Ask yourself first, "What DID I do during those years," and then list what you DID do. Everything that you've experienced has put you where you are today. If I were the prospective employer, I'd want to know why you gave up on IP when you did, and what's different now; maybe now, with maturity, you've had the opportunity to experience the things you now know you DON'T want to do, and have a clearer picture of your more mature goals. The honest approach is always the best! Best of luck!
