Unusual internet connection loss?

Question: I keep losing my connection to the internet. When it happens, I have to restart my computer. Then it'll work for about 5-10 minutes, and suddenly stop without giving me any kind of error message. It's the same whether I use my broadband connection or dialup. I've tried another computer, and there's nothing wrong with the cable modem or the LAN cable. Here's another mysterious aspect: when it goes bad, if I'm in the middle of a download or watching a video, the download progress will just stop. But if I'm streaming audio (such as a live baseball game) it keeps working for hours, even though I can't go to any web sites. I've downloaded new drivers for my network adapters, I've run virus scans, and I've checked out eventvwr, but I don't see anything unusual.

Answer:
Anti-spy ware was not mentioned.

get on the DOS prompt and run netstat command with IE closed and record the number of connections

run netstat again with IE open and record the number of connections.

If you get more than 1-2 more with IE open you pretty much have spyware and need to get Windows Defender at the Microsoft Download Center( FREE).

Good Luck

I suspect something a bit worse than a virus. maybe a rootkit (and everything that that implies). A good place to start is:

I don't think it's hardware since a restart fixes it briefly. If the NIC was locking up you would probably have to shut down and power back up to reset it.
