IT help help desk - what does a person need to know to get this position?
Question: Does anybody know what does a person need to know to be able to work in an IT company - help desk technical support?
Answer:
Take the A+ certification practice exams. If you can answer all the questions with a 100 percent, you may be a helpdesk support person.
It's harder than you think.

Different places have different requirements. contact the company you wish to work for.
Most help desk positions require at least A+ certification, and a strong background in customer service. Even though most of the job is reading scripts on a computer screen, you have to be able to think quick. In addition, you have to have a lot of patience with people. Most customers who call IT help desks know just enough about their computers to make them dangerous. Good luck.
It surely depends on the company's requirements/profile. Basically, troubleshooting computer software and hardware.
Should have a varied background in whatever field it is. Software, Hardware, Printers, Computers, and to be good you need to know your product inside and out. I have gotten some real dooseys in my day, when I knew they were reading a manual. It's bad when you know more than the person at the help desk.
There are lots of of courses to take that could help, like..."Supporting Users Running Applications on the Windows XP Operating System"
"Supporting Users Running the Microsoft XP Operating System"
There is the A+ and network +, but if you are relatively inexperienced then you could find an apprentice/ junior position somewhere maybe. Then they usually pay for your courses
I'm active duty military, and I do tech support for the base. Since I'm military, I don't need to know anything about computers to get into it. As for the civilian side, it all depends at what level. Some people will hire people right out of high school with no certifications if they're smart enough. There are lots of classes at community colleges, and CompTIA does have some good certifications that are respected by everyone such as A+, Network+ and Security+
Depending on the company, but generally a good, broad knowledge of computers and more specifically the software that the company uses.
