Answer:
Take a look at this article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922370/e...

Note that the article shows the way your computer currently is, so when you look at the value of the registry key it should already be 0.
If you change the value to 1, it should restore the active desktop, but will also remove the desktop tab in display properties, according to the article.
This just happened to me. Sadly, it may mean that you have a corrupt hard drive. Equally sadly, I have no idea how it happened. I had anti-virus and anti-spyware programs loaded up and it did no good. You may have to do as I did: pony up to have your hard drive erased and have Windows (or the OS of your choice) reloaded. Good luck.
Before you do anything as drastic as reinstalling the OS, you should first try to restore the system via windows restore program..

You will need to trigger the boot menu at boot up which will give you the option of restoring to the last know good configuration.

Most computer are triggered by either hitting or holding the F8 key at boot. Menu will be a DOS menu with many options, including Safe Mode and Normal as well as the Restore.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON - Some computers have a "restore" program that restores to factory settings, Which may also be listed in this menu. YOU DO NOT WANT THIS YET. Make sure you have the Windows restore and not the manufacturers restore. If you get a message saying all data on system or drive C will be erased or lost. HIT CANCEL and start again.

Select the restore option and answer any questions that are asked, most will have a logical answer. IF it has more than one restore point option, select the closest one to today. That leaves an even earlier one for a second try. When the system finishes booting up, it will have removed any new program or drivers that were installed since the last restore point was created, which is most likely the cause of your problem. This may well solve your problem, and will not in any event make it any worse.

I usually disconnect from the internet when doing this, just in case it was a virus or Trojan which wants access to the web that caused the problem.

If your restore works, make certain that above all else, you run a virus scan and spy ware scan as soon as possible. Some viruses and Trojans can cause the active desktop to crash. You do not want the problem to recur, with no restore point to return to.
