Does streaming mess up a network over time?
Question: My little brothers R obsessed with watching cartoon clips on youtube and other video sites. Lately, there have been problems with our network, and they all started right after they began watching them. Is that the reason? If it is, can u tell me how to fix the network. The main problem we have been having is that the computers that aren't connected to the router through wires have been losing the connection for about half a minute every few minutes. We can't just tell them to stop, because they're basically addicted to the computer. Is there a way we can just totally block those websites unless u have the password,but not have to allow every other site through password only? thnx.
It sounds more like you are experiencing wireless interference. Try changing the channel that your wireless router uses and see if the problems are reduced. You can do this through the administration page of the wireless router.
The problem could be that their computer is using all of the network bandwith thereby causing your other computers to disconnect. You may also want to check the router manufactures website for firmware updates. There may be some issues resolved with a newer firmware. As far as blocking content, you can use the content advisor in Internet Explorer to allow or disallow sites. It is under internet options and then under the content tab.
Streaming media does not mess up a network over time. It does sound that since you have a wireless network you have interference. In order to change what channel you are on you'll need to look in the manual of the router. Sometimes, out of the box, the channel that the router is set on interfears with Microwaves, and Cordless phones, so changing the channel should help you out. If you want to password protect a specific page, you could get some content blocking software that would work very similar to that.
