What does this ping test mean?

Question: For two days now, I can't load a web page I use all the time.(hexrpg.com) A tech from the cable company had me run a ping test, which showed that line 17 timed out.
He said I had to wait until whoever "handles that device" fixes it.

Question-how will whoever "handles the device" know it's not working?

Question-a friend who lives in the same town as me, also uses the same cable company for connection, is able to get on this website, but not me.

I just don't get it. I'm just not computer savvy enough!

Answer:
Wait a second.

It sounds like he had your run the ping test with a command like so:

"ping www.website.com -t"

and ONLY at line 17 it timed out?

If that's the case, that technician completely blew you off. If you could ping it and it successfully responded like this:

Packets sent =18, received = 17, lost=1

That one lost is simply just a hiccup. Now if you're dropping all packets, then that's something else - but you only saw line 17 as dropping off, if I read this correctly.

Are you having any issues connecting to other websites? Or is it just this one? Does your friend use the same internet service provider?

Try websites you don't frequently visit, maybe www.hbo.com or www.red.com. If they open, then we can assume there aren't major problems with your network.

If it's only this website, does your friend use the same internet service? If you friend uses the same internet service, then it is *likely* your PC, more specifically in your firewall or anti-virus.

The major question is this: if all pings dropped (timed out), then it's your ISP. If only one ping out of several dropped, it's your PC.

Try disabling your firewall and anti-virus, and then try accessing the site.
It means there is nothing you can do. Its all in someone else's hands (the site owner)
your connection to the cable company and you ping test told them trust me right now they are working on it as fast as they can
A ping test is basically a diagnostic you can use to test whether or not you have a connection with a server or computer(or internet). What it does is it sends a packet of data to a server or computer and if it receives one back, then you have a valid connection. I'm not quite sure what you mean by whoever handles the device but if the ping test fails when the people at the cable company try to ping you, then they know there's a problem with your connection meaning you have wires mixed up or some network settings off.
Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. Ping works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets ("Ping?") to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies (sometimes dubbed "Pong!" as an analog from the Ping Pong table tennis sport.) Using interval timing and response rate, ping estimates the round-trip time (generally in milliseconds although the unit is often omitted) and packet loss (if any) rate between hosts.

The word ping is also frequently used as a verb or noun, where it can refer directly to the round-trip time, the act of running a ping program or measuring the round-trip time. See also: Ping (video games)

IF your friend is able to connect the cable company should also have you do a " tracert" to the dns name of that company.
IE: tracert yahoo.com
This will do a trace from your machine, thourgh your ISP to the source of destination your going to. Where the request times out thats where your trouble is and your ISP should help in resolving it.
Internet is all about communication, but how do you know there's a computer listening? The equivalent of "Is anyone there?" is a ping. It sends a very small amount of data as a ping and waits for a response. A response indicates a presence.

A ping test for the webpage is a way of checking if the computer with the webpage (the webserver) is actually working. "He said I had to wait until whoever "handles that device" fixes it." Sounds like he is giving you the run around. What device, the webserver? Works fine for me.
it tests how fast your connection speed is on the internet or a game
Not sure either I would get out the owner manual of your computer (you will need model/seiral numbers ect) to sign on with them, & chat live in tech support with that computer company, they will walk you thru any problem your having .
wow i thought i knew nothing ..now i'm positive.
The tech at the cable company doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. Many companies with websites do not allow their webserver to accept ping requests... and that is the case with hexrpg.com.

It's a strange problem, but one thing you can do is open a command prompt window and run the following:

tracert hexrpg.com

This will tell you where the connection times out

You can also type nslookup hexrpg.com and put the ip address for the site into your browser address bar - incase there's some type of name resolution issue.

Hope this helps
I got there...the interactive harry potter RPG website... lol

Maybe they blocked you. Ha!
