Connection limitations?
Question: I have a network at home.
A DSL connection with 6mb down and 768 up
a wireless linksys router, ver 1, running DD-WRT
1 2003 server
1 vista laptop
My issues is the following
my connection speed is 6 mb down. I download files using utorrent, which usually downloads at 500 kbps. during the downloading process my whole connection on the network slows down. sometimes to a point where i can not even load web pages.
If i am using 500kbps, i should have 5.5 MB left to use. why does the connection slow down and where is the bottle neck?
i did a speed test and showed that i am getting almost 6 MB down. which device is reaching its max capabilites? is it the router? is this too much for it to process? if yes, which routers can handle this load and make max use of this conection?
Answer:
You haven't indicated what the speed of your wireless Linksys router is. I would bet that's the bottleneck though. Wired connections are much faster.

its not your router,i have a 6mb connection and i don't even use a router, when someone used one of those torrent to download a video game on my computer it downloaded at about 33kb down and about 33 up,and every time i tried to go to a web page it would load almost as slow as dial up.the best way to know if its your router is to unhook your router and hook your computer directly to your dsl modem and then try downloading and see if you still have the same problem.you may have to use a different torrent to download.
This is more likely contention issues, during busy times there can be up to 30 (some ISPs more) people borrowing bits of your bandwidth.
