Does the United States pay too much attention on helping other countries and not enough on itself?

Question:
I have to say, when it comes to doling out the cash, the United States is great for that. They give away billions of aid every year to other countries who are less fortunate than themselves.

However you see in the news daily of children right inside our borders who dont eat, old people with no health care and families who have substandard housing. Lack of affordable jobs, daycare, healthcare, housing, education options are problems plaguing America yet there is more emphasis to rebuild other countries.

Wouldnt it be a better idea to focus on itself instead of focusing on the well being of the rest of the world for a while or would that do more harm than good?

Answer:
YES!! I agree 100%. No excuse for us to be sending vast amounts of money to countires who just ***** and complain anyway.
they only help so the offshore kickbacks wont get taxed...the money never makes it to its destination
Yes, and Israel should be the first one scratched off the list.
Yep. The only answer is for America to become even MORE self-centered. That will solve all our problems.
yes!

i think George Washington was right when he warned us to remain a solo nation.
Giving away money to other countries is important.
The US do that in order to improve the broken image of the US outside.
I agree with you as I think the same about Australia. But in this day in age it is all about having the right people on your side and we aren't giving anything away without getting or expecting anything in return. When our countries need the help by rights these countries that we help support, should be right there beside us. I do think they should put more money into our own countries to better educate kids and clean up the streets.
Answering the original question...in a word...YES. But it's always been that way. However we USED TO DO IT with missionaries and tools to teach them to work for themselves. Now it's just handed out on a silver platter because the lack of funds means a lack of missionary workers.
Yes, I agree, Hurricane Katrina prime example, but i would also keep my close allies and 3rd world countries on my help list but all others can go
can you imagine, if we spend all that n\money on healthcare for the working people or on welfare??
Yes!
The process of helping these other countries is way more deep then you imagine. I understand and see your view on how you think that our country should focus more on it's self but that is exactly what it is doing. Just because we are helping other countries out doesn't mean we are not bennifiting from it. Essentially the help is more of a way of causing those other countries to build a dependancy on us. That in return leads to higher power. It's used as a type of insurance. It may seem easy to say why don't we just stop sending them help and focus on ourselves but were not the only ones participating every country in the U.N. is contributing.
