Homeless or a health care problem ?
Question:
ignore one possibe missing link; the health care system. While some
others do not want to deal with some of the core problems, but rather
deal with a symptom of a problem, homelessness.
If we are to discuss this issue, we must not be ‘politically
correct’, we must explore the many cause of homelessness, and be
critical by moving beyond generalized black and white logic, which the
truth is not.
Back some 20 years ago I rented to a homeless man who was living not on
the streets, but in the forest. He appeared to be a nice man however he
had health issues, he had been labeled a schizophrenic. We rented him a
two room suite he was a nice man for some 6 years.
After a few years his condition worsened, and many other tenants left the building, so had to give him a notice to leave. In fact he had now developed a serious intestinal problem requiring surge
So is the problem really a health issue ?
Answer:
NIce question, where did you cut and paste it from, it is obviously not yours.
In large part, yes. Forget the fact that those with mental health issues are considered to be on the absolute bottom rung of the society. People who don't have health care cannot afford simple wellness checks. Why else are white women the most often diagnosed with Breast Cancer? Because minorities, typically poorer, can't afford to get mammograms.
Providing for society's basic and fundamental needs will eventually help alleviate many problems. Educate people - you'll see less crime, drugs and homelessness. Give them basic health care - homelessness and welfare dependency will lessen.
The fundamentals are simple, but some people honestly believe that poorer people choose to be that way. Granted drug addiction is a choice, but again, education will stem that in urban and minority populations, and again, wealthier people can afford rehab. They also don't have as many things working against them as poorer people to make success in quitting addiction more difficult.
They are both a serious problem. There are over 60 million people in this coutry that either have no helath insurance or poor coverage. If someone has one trip to the hospital they are bankrupt. Homeless is a problem also. There is not enough low income housing. It is a shame when people do have a income but don't make enough to rent a apartment.
