How does American health care work compared to what we have in the UK (NHS)?
Question:
(Covered by the UK taxpayer)
How do Americans get their health care do you pay for everything full stop or do low income people get free cover please explain just interested.
Answer:
Low income people do qualify for Medicaid which is 100% free. The prescriptions can cost a little but generally less than $1 US. Medicaid is also available for any children who are uninsured. The largest problem is that only children under 18 qualify for dental. Dental is not covered under any low income program for adults. This applies to people who are disabled or retired and get either Medicaid or Medicare. Medicare is for retired or disabled persons who paid into the Social Security system. They also get a monthly check and that amount depends on how much they earned and paid in over their lifetime. Hope this answers. Just curious how does this differ from your programs?
Low-income people can apply for free health care (Medicaid). Otherwise you really need to have private health insurance. If you work then your employer may offer a scheme whereby reduced premiums will automatically be deducted from your pay check, but even then when you go to the hospital, Doctors or pick up a prescription it's not always free. You still have to pay a certain amount until you reach your deductible for the year and then it is free. If you don't have health insurance and aren't entitled to free care you will be liable for paying the whole costs, which is ridiculously expensive. I think we are very fortunate to have the NHS here, even with its imperfections.
