What are the downsides of buying health insurance online instead of through a broker?

Question:
Based on your experience, what are the advantages/disadvantages of buying a health insurance plan online vs. offline? Does anyone have any recommendations on good sites to buy from and which sites I should avoid?

Answer:
Play them against each other. A good broker won't mind a little friendly competition and will give you a better understanding and more importantly, a better result. Everybody who answers this question has their own biases (me too), but its about you not us.
You can go to insureme.com and ask for quotes. Several agents will call you with more questions and give you quotes so you can compare. I would not recommend buying on-line unless you understand insurance. It can be very complicated and have exclusions and exceptions that you may not understand until you need it and then it is too late. Talking to a local agent who can answer your questions and be there to help with a claim is the best way to go.
You don't have any idea about providers in your area, until you start looking for some, and can't find any close.
Pros and Cons of Online Sites

Pros

Easy access to fast quotes
Many different brokers "trying" to help you

Cons

Online "insurance resources" are just "LEAD SERVICES" for brokers. (I know, I have looked into them before) These are the truths about the online sites.
1. They will sell all of your info (10-30 dollars per broker) to about 3-5 different insurance brokers.

2. You will get calls from 3-5 different brokers. Some people will think this might be an advantage, but other will find 3-5 brokers calling you each day a hassle.

3. They do not have any special relationships with the insurance carriers.

4. Online sites cannot give you personal advise or pick insurance that will best fit your needs. Only licenced Insurance Agents can perform this task on your behalf.

It is much easier to work with 1 broker then potentially 5 at the same time. These are the qualifications that a good broker should have

1. Knowledge of all insurance carriers in your area. Health insurance companies vary state to state, and metro area.

2. Ability to pick the best "Quality" carrier not just the lowest cost. There are huge differences in coverage between carriers and just because one carrier is less expensive does not mean it will be the best fit for your situation.
