Question:
I'm paying about $1100/month for health insurance through work (me + family). I've heard I should stay with the group plan but can I get just as good coverage with a private plan? And we may decide to have another child... do private plans cover pregnancy? any ideas would help
Answer:
The cost of individual health insurance will depend upon what part of the country you live in, your ages, family size, deductible and current health. An average for a family of 4 should be around $300 - $700 per month. If you want to include maternity coverage plan an additional $100 - $300. Be aware that maternity has a waiting period of 9 to 36 months for full benefits, depending upon the company. If you have a pre-existing health condition an individual plan may not cover it. Your best bet would be to call a local independent agent. This person can shop the market and get you personalized quotes that would be much more accurate.
