Good deal on ryukin?

Question:
I was at this nice local fish shop, which has a ton of big, healthy fish unlike the chain stores, and they when I was asking about some of their fish, they showed me this beautiful big (at least 6-7 inches?) ryukin they just got in from someone who turned over all their fish. It is PERFECT, a red one, with long flowing fins that stand upright, and it just looks like a gorgeous show fish. It is $20 and seems in outstanding health. Is that a good deal? How old would this fish be at least -- I don't want to get one that won't live much longer, even if it is fantastic. Would you get it? I was planning to spend that much, and I should have space since I am also planning to upgrade my tank, but I don't want to necessarily get a senior citizen (when I know he will easily sell to someone else. But hee was soo gorgeous! What would you do? And how many fancy goldfish can I fit into a 55 versus 75 gallon tank, healthfully? My orandas are still fairly small, in a 30 gallon.

Answer:
I would say it is a good deal for the shop since they more than likely paid nothing for the fish. I agree if you feel it is worth the $20 and he is in good health buy him. Me personally would offer the store 10 or 15 for the fish.

at around 7 " your fish is close to 5 years old. however that depends on a few factors. the only sure way to tell is to look at a scale under a microscope this will tell you exactly how old the fish is. A Sr. Citizen would be around 8 inches and closer to 25 years old. If the fish looks colorful and healthy I would still have to say he is close to 5.

I would buy the fish.

As far as how many can fit into a 55 would depend on a few things like what kind. 6 7" goldfish can live very happy with a few snails and perhaps a pleco in a 55 As for a 75 if you have great water flow 10 can be happy with a few other mates.

Schools of goldfish can live in less water. most people say 1 goldfish for 10-30 gallons of water, however like Koi, 2 gold fish in a 60 would leave lots of room for more, they can be kept healthy and happy

As long as you realize the Orandas, ryukins (fancy's) can reach 10" most no more than 8 and the tail section does not count as fish you can judge how many. Fancy's grow slower than comets so there is no worries there. you already know you will have to rehouse when they start getting larger.

good luck
Each goldfish needs at least 15-20 gallons all to itself. (less for babies, of course, but never less than 10 gallons EACH)
Their gills need all that space for oxygen processing, an air stone won't help, and a filter is a different issue.

They are also poop alot. They need space so they don't have to live in their own filth.

As to the one you found at the pet store? I don't know. I know the larger species can live quite a while, but I don't think there is a reliable way to tell the age.

If you like it and want it, go for it. So what if it's 20 bucks? You spend that much going to the movies, and that only lasts about 2 hours. My friend has a large Koi that's 15 years old, certainly longer than Shrek 3!
We can't jugde a fish by its size as different ways of feeding and size of habitat it grow up from will also be a great factor to its growth!

But goldfishes normally can live up to 15 over years. The ryukin you are getting should be able to live another 5-10 years!

Goldfishes are like Art pieces, as long as you feel it fit your eyes, the $ paid is good enough! $20 should be good deal.

Goldfishes are also comunitte fishesm your size of tank should be good to keep 5-6 goldfishes to grow to their ripe old age.

Cheers!
how many orandas do you have at the moment?
goldfish will grow to near adult size very quickly, in the space of 1-2 years, and with their 30 year lifespan, i'm sure this guy isn't a senior citizen yet!

the rule for fancy goldfish is 20 US gallons for one goldfish, and 10 US gallons per fish thereafter, and remember to have exceptional filtration! So in a 55 you could have 4-5 goldfish, in a 75 you could have 6-7 goldfish, these must be LONG tanks, not corner tanks or tall tanks, goldfish need lots of lateral swimming space.

if you feel this guy is worth $20 then go for it. or maybe do a bit of haggling with the fish store.
Ryukins are very nice fish.

Just make sure the tank you have him in is big enough.
