How do dental and health plans work?

Question: I just got a permanent job in Canada working for the government, so for the first time in my life I have a health and dental plan. I got a card for the health plan and 2 big stickers for the dental. If I have to pay for prescriptions or something like that at the doctor's office, would I simply pay using my new card from now on, so I don't have to pay out of my pocket? How do the stickers for the dental plan work? Am I covered for eye check ups and glasses too?
