Can I get health insurance from another state?

Question:
I've searched high and low for a decent cheap high deductible health plan in New York (I'm a healthy 27 yr old sole proprieter). For whatever reason, they don't seem to exist. Can I use my mother's Kansas address to get a plan?

Answer:
Sure you can, but it's only going to cover things that you get done in Kansas. And the providers, will be KANSAS providers. And it will cover you according to KANSAS insurance department regulations. Hell of a drive if you have a broken finger.

Are you looking for a major medical insurance policy with high deductible, OR, a health plan? They're two different things. The health insurance plan will cover maintenance things, and the major medical will only cover hospitalizations. With, as you noted, a high deductible. If you're 30 and healthy, the health insurance plan WILL cost $250 a month for just you, the major medical maybe $150 a month. That's just what they cost. There is some variance geographically, but not much.

Contact the guy who does your car insurance, and ask them for a MAJOR MEDICAL quote, with high deductible. Or a referral to someone who can do that.
Have you tried Healthy New York website? I don't know if the income limits prevent you from joining, but check it out!

Family Size Monthly Household Income

2 Up to $2,832

Also, using your mom's Kansas address won't work because you're not going to go there to visit your primary care physician. They're not going to have NY doctors on the network.
No, this is fraudulent and the ins. co. will find out and deny your claims. They will share this information with ins. co clearinghouses and no company will insure you. Don't do it. Keep searching the web for plans. You won't find cheap because it's an individual plan, but you can't afford not to have it. With one medical emergency and no insurance, you could be facing insolvency and even bankruptcy.
You probably can, but the plan probably won't be valid as in-network in New York state, if it's even accepted at all, and then you'll be paying significantly more out of pocket for services anyway. So, that kind of defeats the whole purpose. (And that's only if it's not deemed to be fraudulent, which is a whole other ball of wax.)

Call a local insurance broker and see if they can hook you up with what you're looking for - more often than not, you can get a plan like you describe for $250 a month or so.
You can get this Benefits Plan and use it anywhere in the United States. It's very affordable too.
