What is the best low cost Health Insurance for a 56 year old man?

Question:
My dad is self employed and needs an individual plan. If any of you have a friend or yourself who are buying insurance and you feel like its worth recomending, please let me know so I can do my research on them. Thank you.
saga ins for 50+ age group my mom has just used them said they are cheapest
It's NOT going to be low cost at his age. it's GOING to cost $400 or $500 a month, IF he's in good shape. If he's got "issues", he's not going to be insurable.

Getting recommendations over the 'net is pretty much useless. You'll get lots of spam from health discount plans, which likely have no providers in your area. You'll get a few referrals from companies that don't write insurance in your state.

Your best bet is for your dad to go to the guy that writes his business insurance, and have him quote out a few carriers in the area. That agent will know who's competitively priced, who will write a new policy on someone your dad's age, and, most importantly, who has LOTS of local providers.

Trust me, you do NOT want to have to drive 300 miles to find an "in network" hospital.
your dad might want to try a medical discount plan instead of insurance this way they hold nothing against him not his age nor how much money he made or the condition of his health and he's sure to save ton of money on all his medical and dental expends at a low monthly cost.

It depends on a number of factors...Each carrier will rate him differently, and each state has different rates. DO NOT BUY a discount card. Here is why - depending on the state, most states allow carriers to exclude medical conditions if the individual was not previously covered for that condition by insurance. Some times this exclusion can last a year or 2. Buying a discount program does not count. Therefore, if your Dad has a major problem, and starts getting big medical bills, the discount card will only give a discount, but their will not be a cap. At this point, if yor dad has a condition that continues to be a long term issue, then chances are he could be declined for real health insurance when he really wants it. Your best bet is to find an a few insurance brokers in your area and have them research the options.
