Mandatory health plan?

Question:
My job has a health plan which I pay for every month which they claim is manditory if you aren't otherwise covered. Is this legal?

Answer:
Sorry, I filter to US only questions, and this came up!

Does that mean it's the "universal" health plan that says all canadians are covered? If so, sure it is! NOTHING is free, all the working people pay for it through taxes!
an employer can set up a program that is non optional.. they are looking after you for free . they can't make you work for them but they can set the rules when you do.

like union membership it may be a condition of employment You pay your dues whether you take advantage of your membership benefits or not. but why wouldn't you?

they want to know you are covered so they can fell better about themselves. there are worse types to work for.

we have a basic plan that we are all part of at my work which is part of our remuneration package. in other words it is money spent BY the employer and which we must pay for as a taxable benefit. if we opt out of the basic plan because we are covered elsewhere we don't get our money back because we dont put any in.. the tax on it is pennies

but most of it comes with the option to upgrade coverage at our own expense.
