Any surveys done to determine Boomers' criteria for choosing a place to live after retirement?

Question:

I'm looking for any surveys done, such by AARP or some other organization, to identify what criteria Boomers say they use (or will use) when choosing where to live after retirement. By criteria I mean things like warm weather, promixity to health care, affordable housing...that sort of thing. I can guess what the criteria might be, but it would nice to see a survey that validates (or disproves) my thoughts. This is research for a book.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate. Thanks to all who contribute.

I saw a write-up, not a survey, several weeks ago regarding Senior Migration. That's what it's called. You might try checking for surveys under that kind of heading.

Anyway, It said that many of the folks who had headed to Florida and the Southwest, were returning to the North. It had become too expensive for them and declining health. Their families were in the North.

Also, there are many Senior Communities popping up in places like Idaho, Wyoming and North Dakota. Surprising isn't it?

Here's the strange part of it all, it seems that this migration and return "home" is happening in many, many families. Kind of like the parents want a vacation from the kids for a while, and then they return.

I'm a Consulting Societal Gerontologist and this type of information is always interesting to me. I'm currently doing a book myself.

I just had one last thought, or two. Try an Internet search for Senior Migration patterns, it may or may not turn up something. Also, there are a number of Universities that are doing research with the Senior population. Try Senior Research on the net. Hope this is helpful and I know you're resourceful and will find all that you need.

I think that the best you will find is data on where they actually go.
I'm somewhat older than the boomers, what is called a "depression baby". I'm a member of the AARP and some other oldephart organizations, and a member of the Gallup and other polls, and don't remember any such survey or results of any such survey. Good luck.

What Gaspode said. I'm a member of AARP. No surveys. I have been researching on my own for five years. Wanted to move to AZ (lived there 16 years). Florida is out of the question-way to humid, bugs, "old people". AARP had advertising from Tennessee (who wants to live where yuo know no one).
I have decided to move to a seniors retirement community in Colorado Springs. Not because of weather, it's where my grand children are.
