Democracy it is said is the freedom of speech.isnt food, housing an education more important.?

Question:
singapore provives a good education at affordable prices, jobs, a good pension plan a good health care plan. what more can you ask for. yet the media calls singapore authoritation. i dont care too much for talking too much.

Answer:
Actually, democracy is not freedom of speech. It's government by the people, meaning the general people, or their elected representatives, make the rules.

In the US, under the US constitution, Americans are granted certain rights, and among those rights is freedom of speech.

When all is said and done, what matters most is the people, and are the people happy? If the people of Singapore are happy, then who cares what the media uses as a label for the government?
Why would you want to live in a place where the government censors everything, and they probably lie to you?

Yes, the U.S. government lies to the people sometimes, too, but they don't control the press. The press is too d*mn stubborn to be controlled by the government.

I like my freedoms, all of them.
Democracy is not only the freedom of speech. That is only one aspect. Inform yourself about democracy or isn't it possible where you come from to get the truth?
You can go back to communism.
There was food on the tables, there were cheap houses and your children could grow educated and in a secure land.
At what cost?
This is a free country, I bet you could get a good deal on a one-way ticket at priceright.com
Freedom of speech is a whole more than about 'talking'. It covers a whole variety of things. All those things you listed are important...but without freedom of speech...those things may not be able to happen.
In theory you are correct in saying that your country has a very good system that works for its people, and while I personally think the US could benefit from bit of Socialist influence such as universal health care and free college education I seriously doubt a system such as the one set up in Singapore would work here.
If we could not express ourselves and our oppinions threw active debate and decent we would all go nuts! And we americans are crazy enough as it is you dont want us to bottle stuff up thats how wars start =)
All of them are correct. Democracy is being able to do whatever you want to do, as long as you don't become violent and physically abusive. When organizations try to dictate what should be done, and try to take away a freedom, watch out, because then it is becoming a dictatorship. Like smoking, it is legal and should be up to the individual who wants to smoke. No one should take that right away.
