Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan. My employer "sponsors" a group plan. Employees opt in or pay 100% of the cost

Question:
BCBS has taken the position (I am told) that because the company has a group plan available, I cannot get individual policy. But the group plan is nearly 18,000.00 (yes, 18K) and I cant afford it. I can afford the individual plan. Is this right? This means my employer can preclude me from getting any BCBS coverage. Mind you, I have tried other private insurer's and health will not let me qualify. For many (most) in this situation, it really means no insurance will be available. I can't believe its pay 18K or quit if you want coverage. Its a horribly unjust system we have made.
