Am U.S. citizen interested in living in the U.K(England, Scotland, Wales). What is the best way to do this?

Question:
College educated with diverse interest. Am very interested in the history of the U.K. Not rich, would need to work. No family attachements to speak of. 'Mature' individual, over 21(way over). Time frame I am thinking about is probably 2 years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
As one of the replies said, it is hard to get a work permit in the UK unless you get a job in advance if you aren't rich enough to support yourself for the time that you plan to live in the UK. You didn't say what training you have, but some special skills that are lacking in the UK can get a work visa without a job in advance. The only other work arounds the work permit problem is get hired in multinational that will post you in the UK, which you would probably have to have some luck to be posted where you want; having someone sponsor you, which would normally be a family tie because they become responsible for you if you can't support yourself; be married to a EU citizen, doesn't really matter what nationality, all have the right to settle in the UK except Bulgaria and Romania and their family is allowed to come with them regardless of nationality; or be enrolled in some sort of full time education, though you are usually only allowed to work 20 hours a week unless your institution allows you to do more, and overseas student fees in the UK are very expensive. The easiest thing you can do, and it's not easy, is find someone that will hire you so you can get a work permit.
You could join the USAF - there are USAF bases in the UK.
You can't work legally in the UK on a US passport. You'll either have to marry a UK citizen or get a cash-paying job -- best bet, working in a pub or as a nanny. If you think this is unfair -- it's no different from what Brits have to do if they want to live in the US.
well there are tons of websites where you can find information about the visa process for moving to the Uk but I think your first port of call should defiitely be your nearest British embassy or consulate, they can tell you all you need to know and more besides.

this is a site for Americans now living in England,Scotland or Wales, with quite an active forum so someone should be able to help you...
