I am planning on taking an online class at my college but I am worried about what it will be like?

Question:
My comminity college offers some online courses, how does it all work do you have to be online at a specific time or do you go on whenever you can? Anyone try an online class at there school?

Answer:
I've taken several online classes and the course management software that your school uses (Blackboard? WebCt? Moodle?) allows both synchronous (everyone on at the same time, like IM) and asynchronous (go on when you want, like bulletin boards) communication. You should receive instructions via email from the professor about how to get started and then you follow the syllabus for due dates and chat times. You have to be very responsible and motivated to get everything done on time; usually assignments cannot be submitted after the due date since the software won't let you upload documents after they're due. I think you'll enjoy it if you're willing to check in every day and submit assignments and take quizzes on time.
Generally you have to just read your book and take tests. You may have assignments that will have specific due dates. As far as tests go, you probably need to log in and once the test starts you'll have a specific amount of time to complete the test (i.e., 60 minutes, there will be a timer in the corner of the screen). Basically, you work when you want to. There will be a date you will have to have the course completed. If you felt like it, or you're just a procrastinator like myself, you could do the entire course on the last day.
