Online degree vs on-campus degree?

Question:
I have considered doing online courses through a distance learning school as for one, the area I wish to study is not offered in my area and for two, being a wife and a mother as well as a full time employee, attending classes is not convenient for me at this time. How do employers look at that though? Is it comparative?

Answer:
I definitely agree with the last posting--you need to make sure that the college you choose is accredited. If it isn't, then your degree won't be worth the paper it's printed on when you try to get a job. You also need to make sure (if you plan to move) that the accreditation is valid in all states--not just the state in which you are currently living. University of Phoenix is well-estabished and I believe (not 100% sure, though) that their credits are valid in most states. Online degrees do make up for their convienience in the price, though. A UoP degree (masters for sure) is easily almost 2x's the cost of a "traditional" university. (I got my masters at a state college and a friend got the same degree at UoP...I paid a lot less for credits than he did.)

But yes...if you want to do it, definitely check it out. Most accredited online schools will have counselors available to help you choose classes that fit your course of study and help you maneuver through their system. As for the question about an employer hiring for/against an online degree--I don't really think that's an issue as long as the school is accredited and the classes have the same rigor as a "traditional" program. Might be worth it to ask those who have the degree you are thinking of persuing--they may be able to tell you more about the local climate about degrees from online universities.
As long as you have that degree in hand, it doesn't really matter. It especially doesn't matter if it is a degree from a major university (like Arizona university, or something). Employers just look at the degree, not the grades or how you got it.
Online degrees are a good way to go if you are in the situation you are in. I went the campus route however, that was right out of H.S.
I want to pursue my Masters and it will be online. The main thing you must look when choosing a university is if that university is accredited or not. If not don't bother. Make sure the university's college has an accrediation in whatever discipline you seek. PHX University is the most popular however, it does cost more. There are others out there just research their accrediation and "popularity". It has been my experience that the more recognized the better when seeking employment.
Most online schools charge a ridiculous amount, and have very few degrees to choose from. Check with your local college; many of them offer their own online courses. I attend Boise State, and while I opted to take most of my classes on campus, I also take online courses through them. So far I've taken Art 100, Nonfiction Writing, Anatomy and Physiology and Western Civ online.

I'm also a mom with 3 kids ages 4-15. I take classes 6-9pm, which allows me to be home with the kids during the day (and would allow you to work), and the time I spend away from my family for a few hours each evening has done wonders for me. Check with your local college and see if they offer hours that would work for you. HTH!
