I am not pursuing an "online degree," but I am participating in a court reporting "home school." My experience has been absolutely wonderful. I have a Bachelor's Degree already, but I wanted to specialize without going back to a traditional college. Most people are in a court reporting school for 2 to 3 years or more. I have been home schooling for 1 year, and I am sitting for the national exam in November. I passed the written portion in May.
A home school or online school is what you make of it. If going with an online school for a degree that does not require national certification or something of the like, be sure to go with one that is an extension of a reputable brick and mortar school. This will give you more credibility with potential employers.

Finally at 50 years old I got my degree at the University of Phoenix on-line. It was by far one of the two best things I have ever done for myself. The other was having my daughter. Growing up I hated school because I couldn't stay awake or in one place for any length of time. The on-line environment was perfect for me. The University of Phoenix runs like a well oiled machine. They have all of the bugs and kinks worked out that other schools are trying to fix now. UOP does not give out fluff degrees. I swear they probably overcompensate for that because of the negative image many people have of this type of education. I put most of my life on hold for 2.5 years but it was so worth it. Go for it! like all classes no matter what college it all depends on the teacher. i have had online classes where the teacher gave us 1 question a week and it took 5 minutes to complete i didnt even open up my textbook once that semester. i have also had teacher that gave a crazy amount of homework as well. good luck
