My husband is going ou tof town and he takes college courses online...We are planning on buying a notebook?

Question:
but we dont know the 1st thing abou t them. How do you hook up internet on them, what's a good brand to buy, etc?

Answer:
If you're unfamiliar with laptop and computers, I'd recommend avoiding Apple computers- the software they run is much less user-friendly than Windows and is generally preferred by more advanced computer nerds. :)

Dell or Toshiba laptops are usually of pretty good quality, I've heard mostly good things from people I know who use them. Avoid HP or Compaq- their customer service is terrible.

Most new laptops you purchase will already have a wireless network card installed- but make sure it does before you purchase it. Wireless cards will allow your husband to connect wirelessly to the internet at "wi-fi" spots in public areas, and to certain wireless networks in places he may be staying. Also, all laptops will have a telephone jack (for dial-up access) and an ethernet port (for DSL/cable/etc.) The ethernet port looks much like the port for a telephone cable, but it is larger.
it has a port for your cable just like a normal desktop pc

if you want a windows notebook i would recommend acer

the best is a Mac notebook (apple) but they are a bit more expensive and it's not running windows (but that's not a bad thing :-) )
Go to CVS and bie 1
It plugs in like your desktop .. - to have it wireless - In the UK - we have Hotspots... I use my BT wi-fi card to connect - check out www.btopenzone.com and when I am on holiday in Spain my laptop dials up via my mobile phone.. Most new Laptops have Intel Mobile Centrino in them..Apologies I would start to sound long winded if I went on .& on. Good Luck..
I suggest you go to somewhere like PC WORLD where you can see the different specifications each offers ...how is he looking to connect up to the internet ?.it can eiether be through a modem ie connected by wire /telephone cable or wireless ... As these things are a lot of money i suggest you speak to someone with experience first
if it's only a general purpose, get one you can afford; don't gp overboard with bells and whistles; xp will handle most needs at college (apple IS good, but not all colleges use apple as their core systems; check w/his college; also see if there's a 'student discount' avail.) also, check if there are a lot of 'hot spots' where you connect wirelessly; an on-board (built in) system is nice for that.
get the bare bones model lapper wireless, with a cd RW so he can write onto cd's for homework, storage, etc.
also, go to 'grc,com/security now' and listen to the wireless security segments for a simple explan. about how and why to secure (WPA) your wi-fi conn's.
I don't where you live. But if you are in the US, you can try Best Buy. The people there should be able to advise you the best specification which match your need, and more importantly your pocket :)
You can also try the Apple Store, if you like Apple brand, their laptop are very good and easier to use.
