Can you establish residency in one state if you are taking online courses from a college in another state?

Question:
im gonna be taking online courses through a community college in florida because i was stationed there in the military but i want to attend a four year school in massachusetts after that, im trying to claim residency in massachusetts will i be able to even though im taking the courses out of florida

Answer:
This is a tricky question because 4 year schools are really strict sometimes on in-state tuition and I assume you are talking about a public school in Mass. because a private school's tuition is the same no matter where you are from.

One of the first things schools look for is tax returns. If you have some tax returns from Mass. before you attend there, then that will help. Also, many have specific questions as to why you moved to Mass. For example, you cannot move there specifically for school and claim to be a resident. A lot of times you have to be there for a while, maybe 6 months to 1 year before you start school to get the in-state rates. Now, since you're in the military you may be exempt from this since military people move around so much. I'm not sure exactly how that works. But I would suggest getting an address in Massachusetts and making sure the Mass. school has that as your address first. Get a PO box from the ups store thre if you dont live there yet. But, if your first contact with them is from a Massachusetts address and you claim on your admissions application to be a resident, perhaps they wont question it. This is really a tough issue that a lot of students have though. I went to purdue univ. in indiana and they were very strict about who gets in-state rates, so dont be surprised if they want a ton of documentation about where you are registered to vote, how long you have lived in Mass., tax returns from that state, and why you moved there. Good luck
There are a lot of scholarships available. I suggest going to Google and conducting a search from there. I actually won a $5,000 scholarship about a year ago, and I recently found another contest by the same company for a $10,000 scholarship. It's free to enter, so there's no reason not to.
