Are women seen as autonomous individuals, or not?

Question:
This is a question one of my close friends asked a while back, she said: "why is it that men shape sexual behavior to suit their own interests?" my friend is single and burnt the bra years ago, she believes in women's Lib, and so do i, but she said that "women are not respected as autonomous individuals, but that they are treated as dehumanised sex objects, and playthings for men" I will remain impartial to this statement, and ask you to give your honest views on this?

Answer:
Though real-life women are becoming more and more self-sufficient, the media still tends to portray them as nothing but bodies. Or, if they do have brains, they are portrayed as bitter, conceited, soulless women too obsessed with their careers to make men happy. These women may get respect from other women, but from men and previous generations, it's a different story. (Please introduce me to your friend. She sounds like my kind of woman.)
I don't think that's true anymore. This isn't 1960...this is the 21st century. Women have taken control over how were are viewed and thought of. If we are made into sex objects or objectified.we are doing to ourselves on purpose. Salaries for men and women are starting to equalize. We have a woman in congress. Someday maybe even as president. I think all too often we as women are too afraid to let down our guard. We don't want to be the strereo-typical "50's Mom" so we swing the opposite way. we scare these men and then wonder why we are still single. It's nuts IMO.
woman have always been in charge we just kid ourself and woman go along with it
And why not? Female Hollywood celebs portray themselves that way... MTV and all the other music channel clones portray women that way, all of our popular music portrays women that way... It's impossible to get ANY OTHER message about women! I'm not a feminist by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems to me that popular culture's portrayal of women is dramatically worse TODAY than it was when the feminist project was fresh and new. If I were a feminist, I'd have to consider the past 10-20 years as a low point in human history.

I mean, come on - just look at 90% of the questions asked by teenage girls on this site. It's never about how they can do better in school, or contribute to society, or volunteer, save the planet, etc. It's always about how to know if a boy likes them, or how to tell a boy that she likes him, or if 14 is too young to screw their boyfriend, or how can I dress more sluttily so that guys will like me, etc.

I'm really saddened by the whole thing.

.
feminist......RUN!! (I'm only joking)

Ladies: If you don't want to be a sex object then don't dress/act like one. It's that simple. Why do women who have their boobs out get annoyed when men look?
Personally, I am autonomous and men will have to just deal with that. I don't ask permission to be that way, I just am. I'm no pushover in the romance department either and have to be myself. If a guy cannot deal with that fact, then he is not for me. I am definately no "sex object" though and make that pretty apparent.
I think for a a "woman's libber" your friend has a very stereotyped idea of how men see women. This might have been true years ago but times have moved on and arcane types who believe a woman's place is in the home are now few and far between.
Women (and men) are treated the way that they demand to be treated. If a woman acts like a sexobject she will be treated as one.
