I don't know about "claiming mastery...in a short time" since the guitar is a pretty difficult instrument to master. I first learned how to read guitar tabs online and then took some formal lessons. It ended up making things much easier, because tabs are the most basic ways of putting guitar music on a visual medium. Any guitar tabs site has a "how-to" section on reading tabs. I suggest you start off with power chords as they are the most easiest to play. Good luck.
