Is going to college online a bad idea?

Question:
I'm considering taking some online courses to ease back into college after four years away but learning at your own pace from the leisure of your own computer sounds too good to be true. Should I steer clear of this when I return to college? Is it better to stick to campus? Any tips, advice, and suggestions will be much appreciated...

Answer:
I think you should analyze what kind of time management skills and focus you have .Can you dedicate the time to you need to be successful by being self disciplined, ie turning off the tv, missing out on social activities to study and take your class on-line? How do you learn better-on your own or listening to lectures and asking questions live? Online learning would be difficult for someone who manages their time poorly and has a hard time motivating themself and keeping routines. Going to class provides more structure and discipline then doing it on your own, in the convenience of your home with all those distractions and excuses ("I'll do it tomorrow after the show", etc etc). Online learning also makes it more difficult to meet classmates and listen and learn from their questions/perspective.
Only if it is a diploma mill like University of Phoenix! I go to a online school that is connected to a university that has been around since the turn of the century. It is very flexible. I did have an on campus class last semester and I said that was the last time.

It all depends on what your needs, schedule, learning style and discipline is.

I stay connected by visiting campus to log in to class or to read and do some work.
my friend took college online and now she makes more than i do so i think its a good idea
Going to college either online or in the actual classroom is a good thing to do. I have done both methods of college and online learning is great because you can sit at home and go to class. The thing is that it takes more discipline to make yourself complete assignments and study on time, without having someone say this is due or that is due. If you are skeptical, then try taking 1 online course to see if its for you. You can also look to see if any colleges have a hybrid format, that is part of the course is in person, the other half online.
Whether it is the best or not it is always better than no education. You learn more in the classroom and your Diploma is treated better when going for a job if it is a reputable regular University than one of the many private universities. That means University of Michigan is better than University of Phoenix.
Many notable Universites run by states carry online classes. They are fine as long as you can manage your time well. But remember it is not the same as being in class and talking to an instructor and connecting with other students.
I think going to college is the first choice if you can even it it takes longer.
Good Luck
A degree from an on-line university does not hold any weight compared to attending school on campus and earning a degree. Writing a bunch of papers on-line and posting blurbs on an intranet web site is not the equivalent of attending class and interacting with your professor.

The more effort that is put in to actually managing your private and academic life does not go unnoticed in the job market.

However, if you are just taking a few classes on-line to ease back in to academia that is fine. Be sure to take the classes from an established campus based University with a good reputation, an example would be the University of Washington.

Good luck, the more effort you put in, the more you will get out.
