Is HDTV free? Are only local channels free or are channels like ESPN HD and TNT HD free also?
Question:
Answer:
Local channels are Free..
All the other ones you have to pay..
Local HD channels can be free, but not cable/satellite stations like ESPN, TNT, HBO, etc.
The way you can get free HD broadcast is to buy an HD antenna and connect it to your HD TV. Obviously, you cannot get these stations without the antenna or a HDTV.
If you want to get HD ESPN, TNT, HBO, Discovery, then you need to subscribe to an HD cable or satellite package. Also, you need to connect the STB or receiver to your HDTV with component or HDMI.
The local channels are free. Cable channels require you to purchase HD programming from your cable/satalite provider. For the HD programming from directtv its only $10 a month.
An old fashioned antenna will pick up local HDTV signals. The irony of a 50 + year old technology with a $6000 plasma tv has led to the resurgence of antenna companies, long past their expected prime.
To get HDTV premium channels, you need to subscribe to Direct TV (which has over 150 channels), Dish, etc., or a cable provider. The HDTV receiver costs about $9.95 per month.
