Why do I have to pay extra to recieve HD signal?

Question:
I just spent 1500 dollars on a new TV and now my cable company tells me that if I want HD, I've got to pay 250 bucks for a box and 25 bucks more per month. Plus, I won't get very many channels in high def. Why?

Answer:
$250 for a box?? Sheesh, sounds like DISH Network trying to do the same to me.all because I presently use Dish !

They sure don't want to keep their customers do they...

I suggest you move to Dish, and I'll move to Cable.then they give you the box for free and we both only pay $25 more per month..

And have them mount the Dish in your yard instead of the roof.it's MUCH more stable and reliable if you can do it that way.
Because TV has become a racket just like anything else has!
some cable companies will supply it free with one of there packages
i live in la and i get hd programming using my tv antenna may be they do the same where you r my tv is a vizio 32L i use the DTV input to get hd Programming
You are better off going to Best Buy and just buying a HD reciever. If you don't want to pay for any service then hook up a antenna to your HD reciever
Some day the HD service will be free.
I bought a HD tv 4 years ago and have yet to really enjoy HD tv, except my xbox 360 looks nice
I refuse to pay them extra.
Everybody wants your money, geez
That sounds like a total rip off. If your TV has a tuner built in you will eventually be able to enjoy HD content on your normal channels. Like the previous answer, cable companies are not non-profit organizations so they figure out any little way to bill you. Like when you first sign up and the bill is only like $30, but after you get hooked it jumps to $55 or more.

In Feb. of 2009 all broadcasting will be required to switch over to digital. It is assumed that cable companies will just feed the signal along that they get. So it is presumed that you will get the HD content then, stuff like CSI and other new shows the networks deam HD worthy. But in reality they are not actually required to pass true HD signal along. It would require more equipment to have an analog and a digital channel of the same channel and they would have to use two channels that they could otherwise use for other content, but in the end its the cable company's call.

If you want to see if hooking up an antenna is worth the trouble try visitting antennawab.org. After you go through their steps if you see a bunch of channels in yellow an indoor antenna should bring in those channels.
