I have a 37" LCD, why are some programs scrunched and not full screen?

Question:
I have HD television. Some channels there's a box around the whole screen. On some channels there's only black borders on the right and left. On some channels I can view full screen. What does this mean?
I'm guessing it's because not all channel transmit in HD yet. Some do have regular channels, and some have both. You will see full screen only on the HD channels, but you can 'stretch' the picture, but it looks weird. Laws state that stations have a certain amount of time left before they have to go to HD. Then you regular picture tube TV's will be obsolete unless you have some sort of box that allows HD channels.

Then again, I'm not too familiar with any of this. LOL. I still haven't completely figured out my set.
That can be confusing.

The problem is the native rate of the TV vs. the native rate of the programming. However in TV's it's not really native rate.. it's native format.

The black bars are because there's a square showing on a rectangle, the tv fills in the rest.

When there's a box all around the screen it's because the program is coming into your TV as a 4:3 image (square) and it's being shown on a 16:9 (bars on side) However at the "station" they have formatted a 16:9 to fit inside a 4:3 (rectange in a square) So as to keep all the picture they can.. they have put a rectangle in a square and they your tv puts a square in a rectangle (rectangle inside a square inside a rectangle) which is why there's now a "small" rectangle.

Want to fix it.. most tv's have an "aspect" or "format" button. Just push it and it will warp the picture, stretch, or zoom.. to try and fill up the screen. Find whatever you like best.

Good Luck
It's because THEY CONTROL YOUR TV SET...
Yep.took them 50 years but the Station Managers Won.

They now have access to the Frame, the Resolution, AND the Aspect Ratio.all with the FLICK of a switch..

And there isn't a dam thing you can do about it.
Moo ha ha haaaaaaa...
i think on some programs are not in hd the ones that are not in hd are small and the ones with hd are big
