Will the SH HD set box still be useful after I stop subscribing ?

Choice of gift (B) Starhub HD package or (C) Home Theatre
SH HD require subscription of 3 Basic group of minimum 3mths.
If I intend to stop the the subscription after 3mths.
Will I have to return the HD setbox?
Will the SH HD set box still be useful ?
Will it able to receive free to air channel eg Ch 5 8 ?
Will it improved PQ of free to air channel eg Ch 5 8 significantly?

In some cases it comes on a 5 year rent contract after which you have to pay additional charges for keep the service going on another hand the set can not be used with other or such service after stooping the service from the original content provider.
