How does this work?
Question:
Answer:
First of all direct tv does NOT have 150 HD channels they have digital channels this does not mean HD, digital is better than most cable channels (analog) but is not HD. All broadcasts must be digital by feb. 2009 but not necessarly HD.
The cable companies are not movitated because they have probably been given an exclusive franchise to your area by the city, the only competition they have is the satellite and in many cases the satellite companies do not have access to the local programming. Depending on the market area in which you live there may not be enough subscribers to justify the expense of investing in the necessary equiptment to bring you HD programming.
The area where I live it started years ago when you would see a program being broadcast in 5.1 dolby surround, at least that is what the tv said but with nosing around you found the cable company did not re-broadcast the 5.1 to the subscribers because they didn't have the equipment. They broadcast in analog and still are so they can charge extra for digital, and even more for HD. Come Feb. 2009 when the Fed makes them broadcast in digital they will then charge extra for HD and extra for those people who will need to rent a box so they can convert back to analog if they do not have a digital set.
The cable companies have invested heavily in equipment over the years running wire, burying wire, etc. but they have been lazy when it comes to quality of programming, since they have had a captive market. Our ABC affiliate here will not allow the satellite company to broadcast ABC programming into the area, they say we can get it with an antenna and even when you can't your just out of luck. Lets face it Cable Companies are not service motivated. They have always been big on "charging extra" for every little thing.
Any obstruction be it weather or extensive foliage , this can affect the reception . remove the obstruction and change the positon
My HD cable package only has 21 HD channels, while one of my neighbors with Bell ExpressVu satellite has 95 or more. I guess you just get what you pay for. We are after our cable provider to even give us local channels in HD !
