How do I use an antenna for HD channels?

Question:
I've been told that you should be able to receive HD channels from an antenna. Is there any special kind of antenna that is needed or can you just use an old-fashioned pair of rabbit ears? I live in a large metro and Have an HD TV, but when I hooked up the antenna and did a channel search only the standard broadcast channels were picked up.
My sister has antenna for HDTV by Philip brand. The antenna it has to me HDTV logo on it. It cost her $40.00. But, it is NOT a true HD. The picture it look like 480i resolution to me. I just got HD Charter cable box & the channels does NOT look like HD & compare to HD-DVD or Blu-ray pictures. I know what HD means & my channels does not look HD. I guess I got rip off.
If you live close enough to local channels that broadcast in HD, then you can buy an out-door free to air Antenna. But, just make sure you tell the dealer how far you live from those channels. The signal needs to be strong.
