Can you receive high definition channels on analog cable?

Question:
Or is digital cable required for all HDTV programming? I know you can receive local HD channels by using a set-top box, but was wondering if it would work with analog cable.

Answer:
Yes but they won't be in HD unless you get yourself a HD setup
HDTV is not an analog technology, so no, it won;t work in HD quality.
HDTV is based on your TV.
You can have an HDTV ready tv and not see HDTV programing...thats what Digital cable brings. Analog cant.
You can't get it over analogue cable, but you can get HD signals over the air, if your local stations broadcast in that quality, but you need a special antenna for it.
If you have a Hi-Def tuner in your receiver/TV and you hook up cable you will find HD channels. Just auto-program your tuner and you will probably find a bunch of them that you cannot receive, but here and there you will find those that you can. They will not be in the advertised locations (such as channel 104 maybe @ 81.09) so just write them down and this will allow you to pay for regular cable and not have to pay the extra for the 'cable card' (that just locates the channels and put them on the correct channel) or pay for the digital cable box. Digital cable boxes are call that because they use digital technology the access the channels, the output is still analog unless you are using HDMI or DVI.
There is no technical reason that HDTV cannot be transmitted over "analog" cable; after all, the signal is just a modulated RF carrier and the cable can't tell the difference. However, most cable systems require you to subscribe to digital service in order to get HDTV. This way you get the converter box with your service that outputs video level HD signals (HDMI or component).
