Is the picture quality on a DLP projector much better w/ HDMI to DVI than it is w/ component cables to DVI?

Theoretically the direct HDMI/DVI connection should be better, since there is less manipulation of the signal (A-D,D-A conversion specifically). The actual differences may be hard to see. Some people report noticeable improvement, others see little. You can spend hours slogging through the discussions on the AVS forum, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/;... search on "HDMI" or "DVI". However, there is no reason to avoid the HDMI-DVI interface if you have it even if the difference is minor. A good reason to use HDMI is the potential threat of "down-rez" of analog outputs from the high definition DVD players. This is because only HDMI/DVI can incorporate copy protection, and the DVD specs of both HD formats allow for a "down-rez" flag to limit analog output to 480p. So far no studio is using that, and they say they have no plans to; but that could change. Why take a chance? Broadcasters (at present) are prohibited from down-rezzing, but the "broadcast flag" which allows that is being transmitted. Again, the FCC could change its mind. With HDMI you have no worries.
I have just purchased a dlp rear projection tv and did a lot of research from which all say hdmi is the best way to connect external devices. A cable doesn't cost much so give it a go.
Significant probably not. I once hooked up a plasma to a LG upconvert DVD player that allowed me to output through both the HDMI and Component.
I put the TV on split screen and had both images side by side. Wow Big difference doing it that way.
The issue was that before I did that most people could not tell the difference between the 2 unless I pointed it out because the input switch would take a second equal perfor 2 and people would lose the mental picture. Since both look great they said they saw no differnce.
With the split screen the difference was noticable but not how we expected. I thought the sharpness would be improved and that the image would have visable less noise.
The picture basically had better colors and depth. We watched a few movies but the one I remember was the Polar Express. The colors really popped with the HDMI. They looked Bland or washed out with the component. That was about it.
I definitily would upgrade (actually I did all around). But don't expect your upgrade to be night and day thats all.
(PS) My Wife never notices any of my upgrades!
You may notice something if you are running 25 or more feet of cable from the source to the projector.
Yes, it will be better. How much is in the eye of the beholder. You need a high quality cable. I recommend you getan upscaling DVD player as well if you are going to buy the cable, that is where you will truly notice the difference.
