How does over the air HDTV antenna work?

Question: I just bought a new HDTV and am about to buy an HD antenna. What does it do? Does it do the 700 channels or do the regular Channels come in in HD, and how does the antenne hook up?

HDTV give you HD local channel but you have to make sure
if you tv is HD Ready or Building because if not you have to
get HD box from cable, Sattelite or other
