Is HDTV program necessary?
Question:
Answer:
If you don't purchase the HD package you won't get the channel in high def. TNT, for example broadcasts in HD. The HD TNT is a totally different channel than the regular TNT. They broadcast the same thing, but one is in HD and the other is in SD. Without the HD package you will not have access to the HD channels.
Seems like all of these answers just kind of danced around your question...
you have to have a converter that puts out the HD signal... it is a differnt box fromyour cable or dish provide that someone without HD...
DIRECTV offers TNT HD programming as part of their HD package. It is a different signal than the normal digital/analog programming that requires different processing in order to display it - such as the DIRECTV receiver or DVR.
Depending on your location, DIRECTV may not offer local channel HD programming and you will require a regular antenna (possibly amplified) to integrate into the receiver/DVR to get the local HD channels along with the DIRECTV channels.
I have to admit, though, HD programming is AWESOME. I never realized it until after I started watching some of the normal programming. There is such an incredible difference between the picture quality of digital versus HD.
If you want to see it in HD you need to purchase the channel, otherwise it's the same as having a great PC moniter and feeding it a VGA signal. It might look alright, but you aren't taking advantage of the hardware you paid for.
Everything in the signal path has to be HD
compatible (i.e. your television, DirectTV,
TNT, and the program being broadcasted).
If one of these elements are missing, then
you won't get the HD resolution on your TV.
Therefore, in the example that you've given,
you may very well need the TNT HD chan-
nel in order to view the broadcast in the HD
format. In other words, if you have the HD-
TV, and the HD box from DirectTV, you will
need the broadcast channels to be available
to send the HD signal along with the program.

you have to get the programming to view hd, however you can get an off-air ant to view your local hd programming
I wouldn't go with DirecTV. They do not have nearly as many HDTV channels as Dish does. Dish purchased Voom HD networks and has the most channels avail. As well as TNT, ESPN, HGTV, and many more.
You have to buy the HD package in order to watch shows in HD. Digital is not the same as HD. What you are seeing is the basic channels, not the HD ones. When you subscribe to their package you will go to a different channel in order to get HD than you go to in order to get standard tv.
The only way to get HD without paying for the extram programming is by putting up an antenna. There is a video about how to do it here:
Hi there,
You don't have to get the HDTV programming package unless you want to spoil yourself:)
You can still get the non-HD channels on your new HDTV, but there is a noticable difference.
I just got an LCD HDTV recently and I thought that I would be happy with the cheaper "regular" channels. I got a sneak peak at an HDTV channel on my new TV, and so I went ahead and tried the HD package.
After doing so, it's hard for me to watch the non-HD channels. That's what I mean about spoiling yourself.
Once you get hooked, it's hard to turn back:)
it is lots better
