Question:
I was looking to buy a 40 inch lcd hdtv. The salesman told me that regular channels from my outside antenna and none hd Direct tv channels would look worse than my old picture tube tv. Is this true? I was thinking of going with Direct tv hd but there are not that many channels available.
Answer:
Analog signal will look worse on your new TV because the high performance of the set will reveal every defect in the analog picture, especially the noise (snow). However, digital TV (even when not HD) will look great, and in 2009, all broadcast analog TV will stop. Analog cable will continue, but you should switch to digital cable anyway. DirecTV is all digital and the picture will be fine.
I have just got myself a 42" Plasma HD ready Phillips T.V, and yes the picture quality from an ordinary non HD signal is poorer than a non HD T.V. This is due to the fact that the size of screen and quality of screen show up just how bad 625 line imput is. But when in H.D Mode wow.
