How come I get HD shows even though I don't have a HD TV?

Question:
For example in my town NBC is channel 7 and the HD version is 807 and I still get it. I can tell it's really HD because I can see that that the picture is of better quality and some shows like Jay Leno for example are shown in 16:9 widescreen. Is it because I have a HD cable box?

Answer:
The broadcast can be viewed, but without an HDTV and HDTV
receiver, the high resoultion broadast will not be realized.

It sounds like you may have an EDTV (Enhanced Digital TV) which will pass along HD signals only not in true HD resolution.

Maybe your Cable company is different than mine, but mine (Time Warner Cable) charges an extra $8 a month for an HD tier of channels including the 3 major networks and a dozen others.

If you don't have a true HD TV, and they are charging you for this, you realy aren't getting your money's worth and may want to drop it even if the picture is an improvement over the "regular" channel.

Besides, do you really NEED to see Jay Leno in HD?
If your cable box receives HD then it sends it to your TV but it doesn't mean you are actually watching HD. If it is true HD then the picture will show 720P or 1080I etc...the format it is being broadcast in. Plus you can tell a true HD picture because of the quality. Look at the specs of your tv to see what it is capable of receiving.
